This thread is a place for us to discuss one of the most important topics for any club: how we can attract and welcome new members.

A great starting point for this conversation is the idea that our potential members fall into two distinct groups, each motivated by different things. The recent article, "A New Approach to Croquet Marketing," calls them the "Competitive Player" and the "Social Player."

    1. The Competitive Player

This person is drawn to croquet because of the mental challenge and deep tactical nature of the sport. They find satisfaction in skill, outwitting an opponent, and the intensity of a close match. For them, the reward is a feeling of mastery and a well-earned victory.

    2. The Social Player

This person is motivated by community, friendship, and a sense of belonging. For them, the game itself is an enjoyable way to experience camaraderie, shared laughter, and easy conversation.

The key idea is that a generic marketing message might not connect with either of these groups effectively. To grow our clubs, we need to think about creating targeted invitations that speak directly to these different needs.

With that in mind, let's get the discussion started:

    • Does this idea of the "Competitive" vs. "Social" player resonate with what you see at your club?

    • What do you think attracts each type of player to croquet?

    • What kind of messages or events has your club used to successfully attract new members?
