Fixing old photos for the history project

The CAQ Management Committee wants every club to dig out its own history. This includes old photographs, club history books, trophies, and honour boards. Check your photo books, filing cabinets, and the images on your walls. Look for classic trophies sitting in presentation cabinets.
President John van Barneveld said the recording of our history is not up to the standard he wants to see. He noted that much of this history sits in club houses and needs to be preserved for the future. This is especially important for honour boards, as some grand clubs only have partial records following past fires or floods.
A phone photo of a framed item often picks up glass glare and comes out at a crooked angle. We can fix both.
We use a tool that lifts the glare off and squares up the angle, so the picture reads properly and looks face-on.
We proved this in practice this week on two real examples: the Ellen Adelaide Florence portrait and the Abbey family portrait. Both had visible glass glare and were shot at an angle. Both came back straightened and cropped in tight to the frame, matching how a straight-on shot would look.
Only the glare gets touched. The tool redraws or calms the tint of the marked patch and leaves everything else in the picture alone. The real detail, including medal text, engravings and embroidery, stays as original pixels. Nothing genuine is guessed or invented.
The tool keeps the original photo untouched and saves the fixed version alongside it. A record of what was done links the two, so no submission is altered without keeping the original.
Do not tidy up your photos first. Take the photo as you have it. Send it in.
