For the people who run clubs

The handicap card is live on myCroquet

Members can now see and change their own handicap in myCroquet. This is what members and club captains can do, and what changed after the committee test.

A member changes their own index and the handicap follows. A big change saves straight away, with the member's reason. The club captain sees it and can put it back.

Thank you to everyone who tried the handicap card last week. Your tests found things I needed to fix.

I made the fixes and improvements to Handicaps and they are ready to begin being used.

What members can do

  • Open myCroquet and see their handicap and index for Golf, Association and Ricochet.
  • Change their own index after a game. The handicap follows the index by itself.
  • A small change saves straight away.
  • A big change (more than 50 points) also saves straight away, but the member must say what happened first. For example, "won three games at the Gold Coast Open".
The handicap card on a phone. A Golf index goes from 1512 to 1632. A yellow box says: That's a large change! Tell us what happened.

A note from Wade Hart:

The system now accepts large changes without requiring approval of the Club Captain. Previously the player's handicap was locked in limbo until it was approved.

By assuming good faith use we can remove work for 40+ volunteers while also avoiding an unnecessary logic problem.

This relies on good faith usage. Making more volunteer work and more complicated systems to use for the sake of the worst members is poor use of resources.

CAQ does not want good volunteers doing more complicated work for the sake of bad members.

What club captains can do

  • Set any members of their club's handicap index.
  • If a member makes a big change, the captain sees it with the member's reason, and presses one of two buttons. "Looks right" clears it. "Put it back" restores the old number.
The list called Big moves to look at. One change with the member's reason and two buttons: Looks right, and Put it back.

What changed since the test

In the test, a big change waited until the captain approved it. Now it saves first and the captain checks it after.

This is how the paper handicap card has always worked: the player keeps their own card, reports their own number and the system mirrors it with minimum checks.

Records I corrected

I imported all 2,035 handicap records in RevSport across to myCroquet.

156 of them (8%) had a handicap and an index mismatch which I corrected.

If a member says their handicap looks different from what they expect they can change it, or wait for the next tournament where their number will be ingested.

Things to know

If a club has no captain listed in myCroquet, it will be set to secretary. If it is not needed it can be hidden and never seen. The handicap system relies on player's good will, not volunteer work and complicated systems.

Players too do not need to update their handicap in myCroquet if they do not want to. Just like before when tournament sheets are submitted those records will be updated in the database. At the end of play a photograph of the sheet is given to me to process.

If something in the handicap system does not look right, email hello@croquetclaude.com with what you saw. A screenshot helps. This isn't only for errors, but if you do something and what happens isn't what you expected tell me. If you want to do something, but can't or don't know how tell me too because it needs to be intuitive for 70+ year old users who want to use it.

I will continue to improve the system with feedback and new skills I learn. This handicap system is an important project which touches all 4 ideals and Strengthen Admin, Support Clubs, Develop Skilled Play and Encourage Innovative Ideas.
